HISTORY OF IV VITAMIN THERAPY
Dr. John Myers was a medical doctor in Baltimore who was well liked by his patients for his use of IV vitamin therapy. When he died in 1984, a number of his patients sought out Dr. Gaby, and the Myers' cocktail was so named because no one really knew what was in it. Over time, Gaby pieced together and modified a formula that is still used as the backbone for many vitamin IV recipes, and the Myers' cocktail, delivered either by drip or by push, is still among the most popular.
Containing a blend of vitamin C, various B-vitamins, calcium, and magnesium, Gaby gave over 15,000 Myers' over a decade or so, and the results were almost unanimously incredible. Fatigue, depression, fibromyalgia, colds and flus, congestive heart failure, allergies, hyperthyroidism, addiction, headaches and migraines, and many others: most conditions improved substantially with IV vitamin administration.
Gaby started presenting this info at conferences, and the popularity of the treatment rose. It's now an integral part of most naturopathic medical practices, with many NDs offering Myers' and custom IVs to satisfied patients.
WHY IS IV VITAMIN THERAPY SO AWESOME?
There are a few reasons IV vitamin therapy produces results superior to oral supplementation with vitamins and minerals. One is that the digestive system is complex, and a lot of people have trouble absorbing nutrients properly. This is especially true if there is inflammation in the gut (IBD, celiac disease, food sensitivities) or if you're under a lot of stress. IV therapy bypasses the digestive system, so nutrients can be absorbed exactly where they're needed. Another thing that happens with IV therapy is that we're able to achieve blood concentrations of vitamins that just aren't possible with oral or IM (muscular injection) techniques. For example, vitamin C causes diarrhea if taken in high doses, making it quite impossible to ever absorb the concentrations required to have therapeutic effects for things like fighting viruses.
One more thing that's great about IV therapy is how fast it works. People usually feel better during the treatment, and that good feeling lasts for days. With oral supplementation, you usually need to take something for a few days or weeks to notice an effect, but with IV therapy it's immediate.
Lastly, especially in these hot summer months, it's easy to get dehydrated, especially if you're exercising a lot. A vitamin drip can quickly replenish what you sweat out, helping you be more prepared for the next round of whatever awesome sport or fitness activity you're up to.
